LONDON, ONT. – A lightning strike is the suspected cause of a major fire the size of a soccer field in the City of London landfill on Manning Drive on Wednesday morning.

The London Fire Brigade was called to the site shortly after 6:30 a.m. after a fire reportedly broke out among some of the rubbish at the landfill.

“We assume that at this point during yesterday’s storms it was struck by lightning and smoldered overnight,” said Platoon Chief Shawn Fitzgerald.

He tells CTV News that as of 7:25 a.m., the fire will be about the length of a soccer field and about 12 meters wide.

Around 20 firefighters are on duty to cut off the fire from continuing to the landfill.

Fitzgerald says they use tall hoses to break up the big pile of trash.

Hazmat crews are also on site to monitor air quality.

In the meantime, motorists along Wellington Road are advised to be careful as the smoke in the area can be heavy at times.

Fitzgerald says expect crews at the facility all day.

“It’s going to be a long process.”

The site receives waste from the City of London, the Thames Center community, the water treatment plants in Lake Huron and Elgin, and TRY recycling.

No injuries were reported.
