Coronavirus in New York: New small business loan for Brooklyn businesses up to $ 30,000

Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce Launches New Coronavirus Loan Program

Starting this week, some small businesses in Brooklyn may have another chance to secure a coronavirus loan. On Tuesday, the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce began raising funds to distribute loans ranging from $ 500 to $ 30,000 to any small business that has lost business due to the pandemic and has not received funding from the program. federal paycheck protection, the post office first reported. The loans will be distributed after a period of fundraising, when the economy has started to reopen.

Notably, the loans come on much less terms than those that are distributed – or in much of Brooklyn’s case, not being distributed – by the federal government. Independent restaurants, bars and other small businesses can repay interest-free loans on a flexible schedule, with 65% of loans reserved for minority and women-owned businesses. Once repaid, these loans will then be distributed to other businesses in the borough, according to the post office. The Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce is raising funds for additional loans through the crowdsourcing platform Fundrazr. At the time of writing, the chamber Bring back the Brooklyn Fund raised nearly $ 176,000, with the goal of raising up to half a million dollars, according to the fundraiser.

New York and New Jersey were among the states hardest hit by the coronavirus pandemic, but a disproportionately inferior percentage of small businesses in these states received relief from the federal paycheck protection program. Only in Brooklyn, as much as 84 percent of small businesses had not received P3 funding when the federal program ran out of money on April 16. Among small businesses owned by women and minorities in Brooklyn, that number reaches 90%. On April 24, the Congress approved $ 310 billion in additional funding through the PPP, but it remains to be seen how effectively these stimulus loans are supporting US small businesses.
