New York City FC acquired goaltender Mason Stajduhar on loan from Orlando City after complications with COVID-19 left the team shorthanded ahead of Wednesday’s CONCACAF Champions League second leg against the Tigers , announced the club.

This decision was made necessary by the fact that three NYCFC players tested positive for COVID-19, while a fourth, goaltender Sean Johnson, was considered close contact and did not make it to Orlando. for the game.

“I am sad to say that I will not be joining the Orlando team as I have been declared to be in close contact with one of the players who recently tested positive for covid,” Johnson said on Twitter. “I have tested negative so far and hope to continue to do so.”

The positive tests also changed NYCFC’s travel plans, with the team leaving on Tuesday morning. NYCFC has been trailing the Tigers 1-0 since the first leg which was delayed in March, but competition was subsequently halted due to the pandemic. The remaining CCL games are being played at a neutral venue in Orlando with the goal of finishing the competition by the end of the year.

NYCFC manager Ronny Deila told reporters substitute goalie Luis Barraza will take Johnson’s place in the starting lineup and that Stajduhar is available in case of injury.

“Luis has been fighting for two years now to be close to the team and I am very happy now that he has the opportunity,” said Deila. “He is talented, young, he worked very hard and now the time is right and we are looking forward to the game to see how Luis is going to do. I am very confident he will have a good game.”
