NEW YORK, NY, UNITED STATES, Sep. 20, 2021 /EINPresswire.com/ – Edamam, a provider of nutritional data and solutions to food, health and wellness businesses, today released a new data feature called CO2. provides the mastheads of most of the recipes on the English language web and of the most commonly eaten meals around the world.

The company has partnered with the City University of London to use their primary research on food carbon footprints, combining that with its own algorithms and an extensive recipe database to calculate the carbon footprint of the meals people cook and eat.

The feature is initially available through Edamam’s Recipe Search API, which allows users to find recipes based on their estimated carbon footprint. Next, Edamam will make the functionality available to customers who want to calculate the CO2 impact of their recipes or meals and make this data available to end users. This functionality is offered through the company’s nutrition analysis API and is made available on an ad hoc basis to companies such as restaurants, caterers, recipe developers, and food delivery companies.

“We believe data is critical to making the right food choices and carbon footprint is one of the metrics that are becoming increasingly important,” said Victor Penev, Founder and CEO of Edamam.

Edamam has calculated the actual carbon impacts for around 5 million recipes on the English language web and derived them for the 70,000 most commonly consumed meals in the world, a dataset known only for Edamam, called Generic Meals. The company plans to include a traffic light system and lump recipes in categories with light, medium or high CO2 pollution.

“We found a great partner in City University of London, not only because of the quality of the underlying data, but also because of their willingness to work with us and bring this product to market,” added Victor Penev.

Companies interested in carbon data and calculations are encouraged to visit Edamam’s developer portal and submit a request.

In addition to the CO2 capability, Edamam also publishes the labeling of Mediterranean and DASH diets for recipes, meals and foods. The company is constantly adding new data capacity, responding to the needs of the market and aiming to cover the majority of popular nutritional options.
