BERLIN – Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has accused Germany of putting its economy ahead of the country’s security in the run-up to the Russian invasion.
In a speech to the Bundestag on Thursday, Selenskyj criticized the German government’s support for the Nord Stream 2 pipeline project, which is intended to bring natural gas from Russia. Ukraine and others had opposed the project, warning that it endangered Ukraine’s and Europe’s security.
Zelenskyy also noted Germany’s reluctance to impose some of the toughest sanctions on Russia for fear it could hurt the German economy.
The Ukrainian president urged Germany not to let Europe be divided by a new wall and called for his country’s support for his country’s membership of NATO and the European Union.
He also called for more aid to his country, saying thousands of people have been killed in the war, which began almost a month ago, including 108 children.

LONDON – Britain’s Defense Ministry says Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has “largely stalled on all fronts” amid fierce Ukrainian resistance.
The Defense Ministry says Russian forces have made “minimal progress” by land, sea or air in recent days and are suffering heavy casualties.
In an intelligence update on social media. It states that the Ukrainian resistance remains “steadfast and well coordinated”. It states that most of Ukraine’s territory, including all major cities, remains in Ukrainian hands.

Kyiv, Ukraine – Ukrainian officials say the status of people taking refuge in a theater in Mariupol is still uncertain as the entrance was left under rubble from a Russian airstrike.
Pavlo Kyrylenko, head of the Donetsk regional administration, told Telegram on Wednesday evening that “several hundred” residents of Mariupol had taken refuge in the drama theater. He dismissed the Russian military’s claims that the Azov battalion had its headquarters in the theater and stressed that “only civilians” were inside when it was hit earlier Wednesday.
Kyrylenko said the airstrike also hit the Neptun swimming pool complex. “Now there are pregnant women and women with children under the rubble. This is pure terrorism!” said the officer.
As of Monday at least, the sidewalk in front of the once-swanky theater was marked with giant white letters reading “CHILDREN” in Russian, according to images provided by space technology company Maxar.

LVIV, Ukraine – Russian forces have freed the mayor of the Ukrainian city of Melitopol in exchange for nine of its captured conscripts, an official with Ukraine’s Presidential Office said on Wednesday.
Kyiv accused the Russians of kidnapping Mayor Ivan Fedorov about a week ago. Surveillance video showed him marching out of City Hall, apparently surrounded by Russian soldiers.
Residents of Melitopol, a southeastern city currently under Russian control, have protested to demand his release.

LVIV, Ukraine – Ukrainian and Russian delegations held talks via video again on Wednesday.
Advisor to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy Mikhailo Podolyak said Ukraine had demanded a ceasefire, the withdrawal of Russian troops and legal security guarantees for Ukraine from a number of countries.
“This is only possible through direct dialogue” between Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin, he said on Twitter.
An official in Zelenskyi’s office told The Associated Press that the main topic of discussion was whether Russian troops would remain in separatist areas of eastern Ukraine after the war and where the borders would be.
Shortly before the war, Russia recognized the independence of two regions controlled by Russian-backed separatists since 2014. It also expanded the borders of these regions into areas Ukraine had continued to hold, including Mariupol, a port city now under siege.
The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the sensitive talks, said Ukraine insists on including one or more Western nuclear powers in the negotiations and on signing a legally binding document with security guarantees for Ukraine. In exchange, the official said, Ukraine is ready to negotiate neutral status.
Russia has called for a NATO commitment never to accept Ukraine into the alliance or to station forces there.

PANAMA CITY –– Three Panama-flagged ships were hit by Russian missiles in the Black Sea during the Russian war in Ukraine and one sank, Panamanian authorities said on Wednesday.
The ships’ crews “are safe,” said Maritime Authority director Noriel Araúz.
The ship that sank was the Helt, but Araúz did not say when that happened. The other hits were Lord Nelson and Namura Queen. Panamanian officials earlier said the Namura Queen, which is owned by a Japanese company and operated by a company in the Philippines, was hit in February.
Araúz said 10 Panama-flagged ships were in the Black Sea, including the three hit. Together they have about 150 crew members of different nationalities who were not allowed to leave, he said.
“We are in constant communication with the ships … because we know that the Russian Navy will not let them leave the Black Sea,” Araúz said.
Panama is the world leader in registered merchant vessels and has advised its merchant fleet to be on high alert in Ukrainian and Russian waters.
