LONDON, ONT. – With Canadians spending more time in their homes in the past year and a half, they are investing in more home improvement projects than ever before.
The Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC) conducted an analysis showing the City of London ranks second in Ontario housing permits after Brampton.
The city issued 2,469 housing permits in 2020, an increase of 27 percent compared to 2019.
âCalls per week are definitely there. They’ve probably doubled since last year, âsaid London Renovations owner Jason McGuire.
He’s already booking projects for next spring. “I think because people don’t go on vacation, they are essentially taking those dollars to improve their homes,” added McGuire.
That was the case with homeowner Rob Williamson, who had planned a nine-day Scandinavia cruise for October 2020.
When it was canceled, he was able to get a refund and use that money to renovate the kitchen and upgrade one of his bedrooms.
“Just a few more weeks and we’re all done and I’m looking forward to it,” admits Williamson.
McGuire says many homeowners are taking on large projects like this, with the majority choosing to refresh their main floors and kitchens, and trying to make more space overall.
McGuire’s only piece of advice for anyone looking to renovate their home is to keep a âWant vs.
It helps everyone decide which upgrades are most important and keeps homeowners on budget.
