London e-scooter test extended to three new districts

A test with e-scooters in London is to be expanded to three other districts.

City of London, Southwark and some parts of Lambeth will start rolling out e-scooters from Monday, bringing the total number of rentals available in the capital to 1,200.

Around 600 e-scooters are currently available in Ealing, Hammersmith & Fulham, Kensington & Chelsea, Richmond, Tower Hamlets and Canary Wharf.

Transport for London says it is in talks with London Councils and other boroughs about further expansions in the coming months.

Lime has a one-year trial in partnership with TfL that allows people to rent e-scooters through an app (Anthony Upton / PA).

Will Norman, London’s walking and cycling officer, said: “I am delighted that the e-scooter rental trial in London is expanding to the City of London and parts of Lambeth and Southwark.

“Expanding the trial footprint to include more areas will allow us to better understand the role of e-scooters in moving car trips to greener and more sustainable alternatives.

“Safety remains the focus of our attempt, although the stricter safety standards of London also apply in the new large area.”

The City of London Corporation, the governing body of the Square Mile, was supposed to attend the initial rollout but postponed its participation.

The reason for this was not given, but the Evening Standard newspaper reported that it “appeared to be due to a delay in resolving administrative and non-security concerns.”

The 12-month test was launched by Transport for London (TfL), London Councils – which represents the city’s local authorities – and the operators Lime, Dott and Tier.

E-scooters may be used on streets, bike paths and bike paths, but may not be driven on sidewalks.

Private e-scooters are only legal to use on private property in the UK, but are a common sight on streets and sidewalks.

Last month, the Metropolitan Police announced that they had confiscated 507 private e-scooters in seven days.

Chief Superintendent Simon Ovens said at the time: “The private use of e-scooters on London streets remains illegal.

“Drivers who use e-scooters on the road risk fines, points in their driving license and e-scooter confiscation if they continue to use them on public road networks.”
