London’s Tower Bridge remains open due to a technical malfunction

(CNN) – A technical defect meant that the world-famous landmark of London’s Tower Bridge remained open on Monday afternoon and cars and pedestrians cannot cross.
City of London Police confirmed in a tweet that the bridge got stuck due to a “technical failure”, while numerous pictures and videos published on social media show that the receiver sticks upright after opening to let a tall ship through.

Flaps are the moving road sections on the bridge that can be raised and lowered with counterweights. According to the Tower Bridge tourism website, the bridge opens about 800 times a year.

The technical failure resulted in long lines of traffic across the city and pedestrians had to find other ways to cross the river. City of London police told people to avoid the area.

The 278 m long landmark over the Thames was completed in 1894. Once powered by steam, the hydraulic receiver has been powered by oil and electricity since 1976.

The bridge also got stuck in August 2020, with the bridge’s official Twitter account accusing the bridge of “mechanical failure”.

Tower Bridge is a popular tourist attraction, and visitors can stroll along the walkways that connect the two towers.

The sidewalks were originally public but were closed in 1910. They reopened as an exhibition space in the 1980s.
