Tower Bridge in London has been reopened to traffic after the famous intersection was blocked for hours due to a technical problem.

The City of London Corporation, which owns and operates the bridge, said the bridge was “stuck in an elevated position” due to a technical problem.

Roads around the bridge, one of the main crossings of the Thames in central London, were closed to vehicles and pedestrians on Monday afternoon (local time) and evening.

Traffic normalized in the early hours of Tuesday after the intersection reopened.

One of London’s most recognizable landmarks, the bridge was built by the Victorians more than a century ago and first opened in 1894.

It should be able to open so that the many large cargo ships with goods such as sugar and tea can pass. The bridge is now lifted around 800 times a year, around twice a day.

The technical problem brought traffic to a standstill on both sides of the Thames.
