On Thursday evening, Mayor London Breed clearly violated the order currently written while enjoying live music at the Black Cat nightclub in the Tenderloin.
According to Mariecar Mendoza of the San Francisco Chronicle, Breed was maskless for the duration of the indoor event, as were other participants. (SFGATE and the San Francisco Chronicle are both owned by Hearst, but operate independently.)
The city’s health ordinance only allows masks to be removed “while actively eating or drinking”. It says: “People are asked to sit at a table or at a stationary counter or in one place while eating or drinking.”
A video shows a maskless race – neither positioned at a table nor at a stationary counter – standing and dancing without food or drinks in hand. She also posed for photos without wearing a mask.
Breed defended the violation of the order by telling The Chronicle, “Ultimately, anyone who comes in here has to show proof of vaccination. That gives me a lot of security.”
It’s true that vaccines offer high levels of protection against COVID-19 and that San Francisco has one of the highest vaccination rates in the country, but the city’s mask mandate does not allow exceptions for companies that require vaccination status to enter. In August, SFGATE asked the San Francisco Department of Health whether it would consider such an exception after Philadelphia offered this outsourcing in its citywide indoor masking mandate.
A department spokesman simply replied, “The San Francisco ordinance requires people to mask themselves indoors regardless of their vaccination status.”
SFGATE reached out to Breed’s office to ask if the mayor thought changes should be made to the city’s interior mask mandate, but received no response.
