After temporarily relocating from the Ukrainian capital to Poland following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the European Union is resuming its diplomatic presence in Kyiv, it announced on Friday.

EU Ambassador to Ukraine Matti Maasikas “returns to Kyiv to increase EU presence and ensure support from our Ukrainian partners,” the bloc announced on Twitter.

Mr. Maasikas also shared his thoughts.

Meanwhile, Italian Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio said Italy intends to reopen its embassy in Kyiv immediately after Easter.

He proudly claimed: “We were the last to leave Kyiv and we will be among the first to return.”

After meeting at the State Department to discuss the war, he added: “At the same time, we need to step up diplomatic pressure to bring Putin to the negotiating table and reach a ceasefire.”

The news follows Friday’s confirmation that the withdrawal of Russian soldiers from Kyiv had been completed – with Vladimir Putin’s troops en route to Russia or Belarus, according to British defense chiefs.

In an optimistic message, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell tweeted: “With this visit, the European Union returns to Kyiv.

“And I mean that literally: our head of delegation is here again so that we can work even more directly and closely with our Ukrainian partners and ensure support for the Ukrainians.”

He traveled to Ukraine yesterday to meet with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Ukrainian officials, as well as European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
