The Berkshire man’s life was made a misery by the Snapchat loan shark

A man who made the life of a Berkshire resident a misery after threatening him with illegal loan repayments has been sentenced to 16 months in prison.

Rovin Mavunga, 24, from Doncaster, was a loan shark who paid an influencer to promote his illegal loans on Snapchat.

When Berkshire-based Ahmed (not his real name) needed money, he contacted Mavunga through the social media platform.

Ahmed received a loan of £ 1,281 from Mavunga and was asked to repay more than £ 3,500 in total.

However, the Berkshire resident struggled to repay these payments and Mavunag began threatening him.

He did this by:

  • Text him and tell him he “doesn’t want to hear excuses” about payments
  • Told him he was running out of time
  • Posted his location on Snapchat near Ahmed’s house to threaten him
  • A man whom Mavunga introduced to Ahmed told the Berkshire resident he was going to burn his house down.

Mavunga was sentenced to 16 months in prison before Sheffield Crown Court.

When the verdict was pronounced, the court heard that Mavunga was charging 100 percent interest and that it had more than 130 customers.

Tony Quigley, UK illegal lending team leader, said: “Mavunga has exploited financially vulnerable victims.

“We would like to encourage anyone affected by illegal lending to contact us via our 24-hour hotline or via the live chat on our website.

“Our advice to residents in need of financial assistance would be to contact a credit union, not a loan shark, who could take advantage of this and charge excessive interest rates.”
