The Mayor of San Francisco London Breed celebrates the 40th anniversary of Fleet Week – CBS San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO (BCN) – The City by the Bay and Mayor London Breed celebrated the 40th anniversary of Fleet Week in San Francisco on Tuesday.

Race and Fleet Week officials were assisted by federal, state, and local emergency management officials to welcome the fleet back to San Francisco. Representatives of the US Navy, the US Marine Corps and the US Coast Guard will also join Breed in Crane Cove Park.

Since 1981, the city has nurtured its maritime heritage by welcoming Sailors, Marines, and coasts from the National Maritime Services to a weeklong celebration.

Since 2010, the San Francisco Department of Emergency Management has worked with the San Francisco Fleet Week Association and its Center for Humanitarian Assistance to conduct joint military and civilian disaster preparedness drills to promote collaboration among military personnel, first responders, and emergency managers to address disaster resilience in the Bay Area to improve.

Bay Area residents can again see the US Navy Blue Angels pilots practice in and around San Francisco next week before the airshow takes place next weekend, October 8-10.

This year’s air show will show off some of the usual tricks like skydivers, a helicopter and a parachute team among others, but the Blue Angels will also be showcasing their new aircraft, the F-8 Super Hornet, organizers said.

The San Francisco Public Health Director said that while COVID-19 numbers have been declining over the past two months and showing “encouraging signs”, Fleet Week participants will still have to wear masks.

“All events during Fleet Week take place on federal properties that require masking regardless of vaccination status. There will be signs at these federal locations reminding people of the rules, ”he said.

“We continue to encourage people to wear masks indoors. Given the large crowds, we also encourage people to wear a mask outside if possible, ”he said. “COVID is very much with us and we really need to continue to take precautions with common sense.”

Department of Emergency Management officials are encouraging residents and attendees to sign up for Alert SF for public safety news during Fleet Week. To register, send an SMS with “fleetweeksf” to 88877.
