Tributes to the ‘perfect’ mother and five-year-old son who were stabbed to death in Barnet

Police and paramedics discovered the 37-year-old woman and five-year-old boy at 1.37pm Tuesday in Brookside South, Barnet but were unable to rescue them.

Homicide investigators continue to question a 37-year-old man arrested on suspicion of murder. He is known to the Chinese family.

The mother is the 15th woman to be killed in an act of violence in London so far in 2022 – a third of the 46 murders being investigated by the Met, British Transport and the City of London Police.

The ratio is higher than at the same time last year, when 13 out of 58 victims were women.

Forensic experts searched for leads on Wednesday, requesting doorbell cameras and CCTV footage on the affluent street where homes fetch over £800,000.

A neighbor said: “They seemed like a perfect family.

“We saw the mother taking her two boys to the local school every day. She was always smiling and we just can’t believe what happened.

“This is a very quiet area. The first thing I noticed was the ambulance flying nearby. We are all appalled by what happened.”

Another resident added: “It’s a nightmare – the last place you could imagine that happening. “They are a quiet family in this house, nothing unpleasant at all.”

A third added: “They are such reserved people in this house you wouldn’t know they were there. They are very private – the children have been to local schools. We are devastated that this has happened in our community.”

A mother of two said the death scared her.

Becky, 39, who didn’t give her last name, said of her neighbors: “Oh my god it’s just shocking, it really is.

“Yes, I knew the family, nice, quiet Chinese family, from China. I’m bad with names.

“I’m a mother of two girls of a similar age (as the victim child), they’ve never played before but you’ve met them before.

“I cried so much, especially earlier when I heard a child was involved, it was devastating.”

Mum-of-two Rummana Chowdhury, 37, said: “I don’t know her, it’s definitely very sad, it’s shameful.

“I can’t believe this, it’s incredible.

“It’s also scary and sad because everything was fine this morning and all of a sudden this happened.”

Chief Superintendent Sara Leach, the Met North West Police Commander, said: “The entire community will be shocked and saddened to hear of this horrific incident.

“Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the woman and child who died, and with the officers and paramedics who were the first to arrive at an incredibly challenging scene.

“Special detectives are working to determine what happened and one man is in custody.

“While they are open about what happened, I would like to reassure those living in the area that at this time there is nothing to suggest anyone else was involved in this incident.

“I would urge anyone who has seen or heard anything unusual today or in the past few days to come forward and speak to the police. Your information could be crucial as the investigation unfolds.”
